Sautéed apples

From a recipe on the website Taste of Home. These can be a bit sweet, so either lower the sugar or use a mix of sweet and less sweet apples. These are very good with Swedish pancakes and might be nice with vanilla ice cream.

INGREDIENTS (can be halved)

1/4 cup butter (4 Tbl or 1/2 stick)
5 medium Golden Delicious apples
1/4 cup water
1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 tsp cinnamon, mixed together (or 1/2 cup of pre-mixed spice)
(optional) small pinch of nutmeg

PREPARATION

1. Cube the butter and put into a heavy skillet; cast iron is okay.

2. Peel the apples and slice them thinly.

3. Melt the butter on medium high heat and add apples, stirring occasionally for 1 minute.

4. Add water and bring to a boil before adding sugar-and-cinnamon (and nutmeg, if using).

5. Reduce heat to low or medium low, cover, and let simmer until apples are tender, 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally.
